Myths about Implant Dentistry

Implant dentistry has been around for more than 40 years now. In this time span, all its negative impacts have been thoroughly analyzed and corrected. Hence, dentists today can guarantee its results. Myth#1: Dental Implant Surgery is a Painful Procedure
A patient is given local anaesthesia before the implant is fitted into the bone tissue. One injection makes the patient’s mouth area totally numb and he would feel nothing. Once the surgery is complete, there can be a slight discomfort while eating. But if proper care is taken, and all the dentist’s instructions are followed, the effect can be minimized.

Time taken for the surgery is not more than 20-30 minutes. But one has to wait for certain period of time, to let the body accept the implant. While the implant is fusing with the bone, a temporary crown can be fitted. Once the implant has fused completely, a permanent crown would be fitted that will last you a lifetime. Hence, bearing with a little bit of discomfort for worthwhile results shouldn’t be a problem.

Myth#3: It is an expensive procedure
Yes, dental implants are not really cheap. However, it fully restores the function of a healthy tooth. Hence, paying a little extra should not be a cause of concern. They provide you with comfort for the longest period of time, which is not true in case of conventional dentures or fixed bridges. Additionally, with these dentures or bridges you would have to keep visiting your dentist again and again for corrections. Dental implants, on the other hand, are known for causing no inconveniences after the procedure.
Myth#4: Rejection rate is high
Rejection can happen only in 2% of cases, on account of -
 1. An allergy that some patients have with metal objects.
 2. An improper surgery.
Apart from these factors, chances of rejection of dental implants are rare.
Myth#5: Side effects are many
Side effects are involved in any procedure. While treating tooth decay or gum diseases too, we can face some complications. Swelling, bruising, pain, infection, nerve damage, jaw fractures, are common side effects that could occur with an implant surgery. However, they are very rare. When a dentist performs the surgery with all the necessary precautions, and the patient follows all the guidelines, there won’t be any problem post surgery.
